Ash Flat Bank Robbed Second Time In Two Months; $300 Was The Loot
ASH FLAT-- Burglars entered the Bank of Ash Flat for the second time in two months Thursday night, February 11, [1965], Sharp County Sheriff Ray Martin said Friday. But this time the thieves got only about $300 in change and a few bills. The first burglary netted $26,000. Sheriff Martin said the methods used in both burglaries were similar. The sheriff said the burglars pried open the back door of the bank and then pried open the door to the vault. They were unable to open the safe inside and just scooped up what coins and bills were available.

Odus Carpenter, Bank President, said the burglary was discovered when he came to work Friday morning.

The Vault of the Bank of Ash Flat is shown above as it appeared after burglars entered the building through a hole they cut in the roof and tore the vault door open taking almost $300.00. To the right of the vault is the safe, which was robbed last Friday [Feb. 12, 1965]. Most of the money taken was in pennies.
